Osteopathy for toddlers and teenagers
Dorota Jedryszka
It is important to support a child’s health in a stable environment as they transition from a baby to a toddler and from a young child to teenager; osteopathy being a very effective and safe method of treatment. As with any treatment for adults, children require much the same care: a gentle, hands-on approach, with specific needs having to be considered dependent on the age of the child. You may consider bringing your child to a cranial osteopathy appointment if they experience delayed crawling or walking, if they suffer from hip pain or general growing pains, specific abdominal and thoracic pain or even asymmetry of the shoulders, legs or knees.
It is also possible to diagnose anxiety related tension which translates both behaviourally and physically. This can be displayed in varying forms, including (but not limited to) lethargy, aggression, hyperactivity or even headaches and stomach aches. I always make it a priority to detect and address anxiety where it may exist.
Treatment for a teenager is much the same as for that of a younger child, though with the added physical and mental challenges that transitioning into a teenager brings about. Poor posture can continue to be a problem during this phase, if not more so. Sports injuries are much more prevalent in this age range and so the patient can benefit from an osteopathy consultation in such a situation. Anxiety can often increase in teenage years, especially with possible additional stresses stemming from relationships and exams.
